However, the Mexicans were selected only as replacement hosts after the original choice, Colombia, announced in 1983 that it could no longer afford to stage football's greatest tournament. Terrible earthquakes were the prelude to the tournament, but the stadiums were not affected and it was decided to go ahead with the preparations.

Twenty-four teams took part in the finals, as had been the case four years earlier in Spain. This FIFA World Cup was different, however, in that all the second round games were played on a knock-out basis. With only eight teams not making it through, the first round threw up very few surprises. A first, however, was Morocco becoming the first African nation to qualify for the second round in a FIFA World Cup finals competition.

The French, just as they had in 1982, won many fans due to their dazzling football, and the legendary and universally admired midfield foursome of Platini, Giresse, Tigana and Fernandez wrought havoc among even the best-organized defenses.

The "Blues" showed their class in ousting Italy, the world champion, in their second round game, 2-0, before overcoming Brazil in Guadalajara-rather fortuitously but with a great deal of flair-in one of the greatest matches of all time. Tele Santana's Brazilians twice hit the woodwork and frequently overran Michel Platini and his French side, who eventually won the day largely due to the performance of their goalkeeper Joël Bats - amongst other feats, he managed to save a Zico penalty 12 minutes from time. After winning a nail-biting penalty shoot-out (1-1 at full time, then 4-3 on penalties), the French reached the semis. But here, just as in Spain four years earlier, their dreams of FIFA World Cup glory were foiled by a fresher German eleven.

'In the Hands of the Gods' Documentary

The premise of the film is simple - 5 friends - football freestylers -
have the same passion - the meet their idol, Argentina legend, Diego
Maradona. the trick is they have no money, only the football skills. so
they all come up with the idea of getting money to achieve this goal.
The film is a basic road movie with stunts. All five lads are all
completely different from various backgrounds - one was a drug addict,
one into god..you get the idea.

The earn their way across the globe to Argentina basically begging for
money while showing off the tricks with the ball Bagging free rooms,
food and flights on the way

- Will Diego be there when they get there? Would he meet the gang? Will the even get there?

The film starts off like a heavily edited MTV video as you would expect
it to but as the film progresses it shows the different sides of each
person and who much they want this passion - the ultimate reward. You
can see the friends forming and then suddenly they get split up due to
money - or the lack off. and this pulls you in. None of the guys are
actors and this is the real deal. Some moments shine such as the cheeky
Liverpool guy who is proud of earning 250 dollars in one bar just by
doing tricks - classic waving money around scene of joy. or indeed when
two lads get took in for the night in Rio de Janeiro by a poor family
and get fed what little they had - lovely to see. You also see a change
in the gang as the films goes to its final reel. Do they meet him? - Im
not telling!

What we have is a pure and safe documentary about passion and how to
archive your goals. Its fun, heavy, light and very enjoyable even just
to see the gang perform together with the footballing skills.
Delightful in every way these films show be..

Barca is a study of Barcelona Football Club from the inside, during one of its more traumatic years. This is a film about the business of football - you will see the players but ultimately you spend far more time with the people who do the contracts, figure out whether the club is going bust or not, and show up to every match with a sense of pride that is usually reserved for bright children at school.

Barca is a rarity among football clubs, in the sense that its members and fans are also its shareholders. It's run by an attractive oligarchy of forty-something Catalan businessmen. Watch the chorizo consumption in the film - see how the managerial class get fatter and fatter as the season goes on, and as Barca manages to rescue itself from disaster, becoming a first-rate club again. Wonderful.
